About Us
We are women We encourage each other We push ourselves to reach our goals We go to the pace of the slowest hiker We love one another up the next mountain We have fun We support those who are hurting. We are mostly women of a certain age (55-80) and hike and snowshoe with an occasional ski at a moderately slow pace, taking pictures and encouraging one other to meet our goals and pushing a bit to make sure others reach theirs. We are up for new challenges and always look beyond the next mountain for another adventure. We have a main group of 30 women and we have GiG Too, which has over 100 on it. Our main group, the ones who were original members combined with those who have over 100 miles of hiking with us and who are willing to lead, decide which hikes we do and have first dibs on the hikes. As the gals on the main list move away, get injured or age out, we add the most active ones from the other group. When a gal hikes 100 miles within three years and volunteers to organize hikes, she automatically moves up. For most hikes, we go by the motto: We are willing to go to the pace of the slowest hiker. We let the gals know the hikes that are not for them as we get to know one another. The longer hikes we must keep moving to get finished in a day, so we do make sure the gals who sign up can make it. Also, we are a group of women committed to helping each other and enjoying one another's company. We gather round when someone is sick or has a death in the family, for example. We are not MWA, where random people sign up for hikes or invite their out-of-town guests on a one-time event. Occasionally, if a hike doesn't fill and the participants and organizers don't object, we will allow another like-minded friend or family member from out of town along. We are also not tour guides. We recommend Glacier Guides or the Glacier Institute for those services. Our dues are $20 each year (try us out once before committing), which pays for the Spot Emergency transponder, Epipens, water purifier, plus batteries, our website and other group supplies; and we do ask everyone to take her turn driving or lending her car, unless she doesn't have one or has a health issue. When a gal drives, her passengers pay for gas. Please sign up to drive every other hike at least. That doesn't mean you will be "chosen" to drive that often. We take a look at number of people, gas mileage, etc. to fit in as few cars as possible; we won't have the same gal drive twice in a row. We also have some gear for those who may not be able to afford it or for those who want to try gear before purchasing. The items you will need for sure are good hiking boots or at the least sturdy walking shoes, a pack (lumbar or back), and bear spray for when we hike in grizzly country. Most other things you can make do with items you already own. Use our contact form if you are interesting in joining the GiG Too group.
